Riding Levels

Beginner Level 1
No riding experience or limited riding experience
Lead a horse safely
Mount with control
Dismount safely with control
Ride at a walk in correct position
Ride at a trot in the arena in correct position
Halt from walk and trot
Ride turns and reverses at the walk and trot with good control

Beginner Level 2
Can complete all requirements of Level 1
Mount safely and correctly
Dismount and prepare to lead
Tack check
Ride around ring without breaking gait at the trot
Halt on command
Complete circles, reverses and equitation pattern
Canter around ring in good position
Post on the correct diagonal both directions
Ride in correct position at walk, sitting trot, posting trot, jump position

Intermediate
Complete all requirements of Beginner level 2
Ride at the walk without stirrups or bareback
Sitting trot or jog without stirrups or bareback
Posting trot on correct diagonal with change of diagonal
Canter or lope in correct lead, identifying lead
Explain correct use of rein aid, leg aid, seat aid
Circle at sitting trot

Smooth transitions walk, jog or trot, canter or lope
Serpentine pattern
Change of direction on the diagonal
Turnback on the rail

Advanced
Complete all requirement of Intermediate
Demonstrate at the walk-loose rein, rein on contact, medium walk
Demonstrate at the trot-working trot, medium trot, lengthening trot
Demonstrate a simple change of leads at the canter
Demonstrate a turn on the forehand
Execute a halt from any gait
Demonstrate gait transitions smoothly and promptly
Ride circles using the correct bend
Explain proper use of artificial aids
Ride a ring test-either dressage or western pattern
